VENTILATION AND ACCESS GRATES

Your deck requires ventilation, and as much of it as possible. Poor ventilation is one of the main reasons decks fail.

ECO-DECKING is very resistant to moisture, however prolonged exposure to moisture will effect the substructure, decking boards and promote mould growth on your deck.

1. For installations with inadequate ventilation, we recommend a slope of 1 to 2 degrees for drainage, it helps your deck to dry out much faster and prevents ice build up in winter. For installations in climates with

a lot of rain fall and cooler temperatures preventing water from evaporating, the more slope your deck has, the better your deck will last.

2. Decking boards require a 12mm gap from another structure such as the house, retaining wall, pool coping etc, to avoid capillary action and for water to drain away.

3. Decking boards must never be in contact with the ground or another surface except for the substructure.

4. Any deck 400mm or less from the ground must use the plastic clips. Any other deck that has inadequate ventilation must use plastic clips.

For example: A deck 1.5m off ground with sides of the deck enclosed by retaining walls or similar.

5. Use ventilation grates if necessary to allow airflow for decks very low to the ground or membrane.

Tips and Tricks for all installations over membrane

• For membrane decks we suggest using plastic clips for greater ventilation and to allow easier removal of boards if necessary.

• Where possible start laying the boards from the edge of the deck to the dwelling. This way construction

waste can be swept of flushed out prior to the last boards being installed. The last few boards can be

easily removed at a later stage to clean any internal gutters.

• Tidy as you install. It is much easier to sweep the membrane surface clean as you are laying the boards,

than trying to remove construction debris once finished.

• Especially when using aluminum battens, be sure to radius any sharp edges and vacuum any filings or off cuts.

• Use screws with threads designed for metal applications if using aluminium or steel battens.
