Residential Decking Solutions that Create a Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Flow

There is no doubt Australians love the outdoors, 50% of Australians use their outdoor area for entertaining, and 86% of Australians that update their outdoor area do so by adding a structural deck, pergolas, terraces*.

This is no surprise to Jason, Director of JVK & Sons Construction who specialises in outdoor decking solutions for both residential and commercial projects. An outdoor room has become an expectation for Australian homeowners and is seen as an extended living area, so ensuring an indoor-outdoor flow has become synonymous with this.

Having recently completed a residential project in a coastal suburb slightly north of Brisbane, this is exactly what JVK & Sons client requested. “The mandate was to have the outdoor area flow in one straight level line from the house (with no step from the interior space)” said Jason. This included the alfresco area, pool, extended pergola that blended into the back-lawn area. Achieving this using a standard timber sub-frame would be near impossible for a deck so low to the ground, so we needed a deck framing system that could accommodate the low height we had to work with – In this case under 100mm.

Also being so close to the ground you don’t want a timber frame as this could easily rot away with the moisture from the ground. So Outdure’s QwickBuild system, with marine-grade aluminium frames is perfect for a job like this, it can go extremely low to the ground and because it is moisture-proof you don’t have to worry about it getting damaged and rotting in years to come. The alternative would have been to dig the soil out and pour a concrete slab then tile. However, this would not have allowed us to have the flush straight finish that our client wanted.

Jason has been in the building industry for some time and stated “whoever has designed this framing system has thought of everything, it is so easy and super quick to install”.

To put this in perspective on the ‘qwickness’ of install, to frame up a 170sqm deck would normally take 4 days with 2-3 installers, “We almost completed the frame of this in one day with 2.5 installers, that is unheard of!” exclaimed Jason. On top of that, it is aluminium so won’t rot away like a timber frame and you know you are going to get a perfectly straight deck every time.

”On asking Jason what is the benefit of Outdure to his customers, he replied “My customers want indoor-outdoor flow, just like this one we completed, so we were able to achieve this”. The other benefit with QwickBuild is its versatility, the system supports multiple surfaces: hardwood and composite decking, exterior tiles, and even turf – so you can maximise your outdoor space.

When you select Outdure deck/tile/turf surface ranges, (in this case ResortDeck) all fasteners are hidden, there are no nails, splinters, or grout, etc. Jason also added, “ResortDeck is also extremely fast to install, it has twist clips that hold the boards (onto the aluminium) so it fits nice and tight – you get a beautiful finish every time.”

“Our client couldn’t be happier – a beautiful 68sqm deck that is on one straight seamless line, a beautiful Merbau gazebo,” said Jason. With using Outdure there is peace of mind that this will look fantastic in years to come and very little maintenance for the homeowner.
