What Are Composite Bearers And Joists?
Bearers and joists are used to support the weight of the decking and provide you with a level surface. Underneath the decking, they create a framework that ensures your decking boards are secure whilst raising them slightly off the ground, without requiring extensive work on the foundation. Composite bearers and joists refer to the material your bearers and joists are made from. Composite decking supports at Outdure are made from a recycled plastic and wood mix. We also offer timber sub-frames and steel frames. However, these materials come with some drawbacks – which is why our composite decking joists and composite deck bearers are the most popular option by far.
Do You Need Joists For Composite Decking?
Unlike some other materials, composite decking doesn’t require extensive foundation work. It relies instead on a framework of composite deck bearers, which does mean joists are necessary for the decking structure.

Why Are Composite Decking Supports Better Than Other Materials?
Traditional building materials, like timber and steel, have long been the only solution available on the market. But that doesn’t make them the best – or only – options for decking frames. Problems with these materials have plagued the lives of many a homeowner and caused sleepless nights for builders all across Australia.
Wood can become easily warped and it is susceptible to wood rot. Also, consider the chance of termites or that it will easily splinter. Long-term maintenance might also become an issue with the need to regularly weatherproof the deck bearers to prevent lasting damage.
Steel, whilst strong, is prone to corrosive decay when exposes to the elements. This will mean significant upkeep to maintain the strength, appearance and safety of your decking. It’s also known for reflecting heat, and in the middle of summer in Australia, this has the potential to cause problems.
Composite bearers and joists, in comparison, are a middle-of-the-market option with no long-term maintenance needs. The recycled plastic-wood material is created to be weatherproof. Once it’s installed, you can rest easy that the job is complete. Composite decking joists and composite decking supports are the most efficient and effective way to ensure your deck is fully supported throughout the years.
The composite deck bearers at Outdure are specifically designed to fit our composite decking package. That means we produce less waste for landfill by designing for specific measurements. We also use recycled materials in the composite – making this the most environmentally-friendly way of building the deck you always dreamed you would have.

All ResortDeck colours are available in hollow and solid profiles. The perfect 2800 or 4800mm lengths ensure waste is kept at a minimum. The lighter weight circular hollow core has been engineered for maximum efficiency of materials and is ideal for residential and light commercial applications. Solid profile is recommended for heavy use commercial projects.
Note: Outdure recommend 2800mm lengths for minimising expansion and contraction.
In some regions 4800mm lengths are special order only.
How is ResortDeck installed?
On a traditional timber sub-frame, a steel frame or on QwickBuild framing & support system
All methods are effective, for timber sub-frame installations we provide a detailed guide to ensure your deck will be perfect. For many projects including decking over membrane and when a low height finish is required, QwickBuild is the best solution.
